Aod downshift problem

AOD racers have long known you can upshift from first to third gear and then downshift quickly to first gear before upshifting into third. The transmission stays in second until it is necessary to shift into third. The problem with this approach is precious lost time and undue stress on the overdrive band and drum.

It is performing well with the exception of one hiccup. When the trans is cold [first start up in the day] and I approach a stop as it downshifts into first it feels as if I am crossing a cattle guard. It also lugs the motor. Shifting into neutral prior to the stop eliminates the problem. After that first downshift into first it performs as it ...

In stock form (gears), the AOD should shift promptly at a steady 30mph, with just a little more throttle applied. If the TV pressure is not good enough, then that shift will be delayed or take more pedal to make it happen. WOT shifts are around 4500rpm for 1/2, when the TV pressure is getting near the high side and not much more can be had.

what year car are we dealing with? the pressure is adjustable up by the throttle body on the fuel injected models from like 1986- early 1992 models still using the AOD. it adjusts the pressure of the transmission, but too low of pressure causes the clutches in the transmission to slip and making them wear out prematurely
What I intend to do in this article is to go through some of the history, basic function, common problems, how to modify AOD, AODE, & 4R70W Ford Automatic transmissions, and how to diagnose problems. The latter two transmissions, the AODE and 4R70W, are derivatives of the AOD. I will not cover items related to

Newbie here, I have a 1990 Bronco with 5.8, auto trans with overdrive override button on the dash. The engine runs good with 155758 miles, but it shifts very eratic, it acts like it is in a strain and kicks down at the slightest change in pressure on the pedal. You can also feel it downshift...
IF this hard downshifting occurs on frequent basis, change the 2 solenoids first, then see if results change for you? IF not and since you are pulling your trans changing out the rear main seal, new fluid & filter for the long term life expectancy for your transmission is a positive thing here under 100k maintenance, can't hurt any except to ...

you need to check the adustment on the tv valve cable, this is critical with the aod as it adusts the pressure to match the engine torque. hope you didnt buy the dominator jr,simply put its junk. BAUMANN ENGINEERING website has details on how to adjust the tv cable

Common Issues When Transmission Makes Clunking Noise. One common trigger for major auto repairs is transmission problems. Your transmission is necessary in order for your car to operate correctly, and if you start to hear it make a clunking noise, you have good reason to become concerned.
However the downshift valve is connected hydraulically to three valves. It sends a pressure signal to the throttle boost valve which adds presure to main regulated pressure under heavy throttle before the downshift occurs. It also sends pressure to the 2-3 shift, backout and cutback valves.
problem, you will still have braking at two wheels. If this happens, you will notice that the brake pedal goes down much farther and you need to press on it much harder. A much longer distance will be needed to stop the car. Slow the car by downshifting to a lower gear and removing your foot from the accelerator pedal. Pull to
Jan 05, 2008 · The two most likely possibilities are an overdrive band problem, or a stuck 3-4 shift valve. If the overdrive band is worn, when the transmission shifts into overdrive it will neutral out and start to rev freely, but not accelerate the vehicle. If the servo that applies the band is stuck or has badly damaged seals the symptoms will be the same.
I bought a Ford AOD for my 1949 Street Rod 4 years ago. My wife and I drive the Ford all over California and Oregon to all different car events with no problems what-so-ever. The customer service is excellent and the product is the best. Thank you
The AOD is an odd beast, it bypasses the convertor (partially in 3rd, fully in 4th) instead of using a clutched convertor lockup. Your symptoms match that classic convertor lockup shake and the oddity of how an AOD locks out the convertor in higher gears.

A particular caution with automatic transmissions lies in the obvious: you can't control the gears as easily. When going up steep obstacles or deep sand be wary of the trans downshifting on you, resulting in unexpected acceleration. This can also leave you stuck by letting the tires spin and dig into the terrain.

Fortunately, the solution to this problem is a simple one. Per Winstead, “You can have a converter custom-built for the application, or you can change the flexplate to one that has the correct bolt pattern and accommodates the different pilot length of the older type torque converter.”

Vehicles with an AXOD, AXODE, AX4S or AX4N transmission frequently have flare 1-2 & 2-3 upshifts, high pressure, harsh reverse (300 psi), 2-1 downshift clunk, non-adjustable throttle pressure, and clutch or band failure from poor line rise. You get a downshift. Even with the engine being computer controlled the first piece of electronics that made it into the transmission is the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid. The TCC should only come on when the engine is warm and there is no good way to give that input to the transmission. Hand Rivet Gun. Pin Type Cleco Fasteners. ALL18206.
