The service manual says to remove a bunch of parts including the intake manifold, but it is really not necessary. With a flexible socket extension the knock sensor is fairly simple to remove.

It was probably throwing the code the whole time, but I didn't know it until I replaced the dash light bulbs awhile back. The low fuel light is stuck on now too, so that would make sense. Just some FYI, if the knock sensor detects a noise (knock) within the specified frequency range, the PCM won't set a knock sensor code. The knock sensor code only shows up when there is a problem in the knock sensor circuit. When knock is present and detected, the reaction by the PCM is to retard ignition timing only.
